Re: Virus/Internet Protection Software
It's ok that you connect with a physical wire, if you're connected to a LAN port on your router the router is offering you inbound Firewall protection. NAT stands for Network Address Translation. It's how a router allows several computers to share a single (sometimes multiple) Internet connection. N...

Re: How to migrate to a larger hard drive ?
Is the old 4GB drive still bootable? If the 4GB drive is still intact install it as the IDE Master drive with the larger drive as the slave. Boot into the 7.10 installation on the 4GB drive then open a terminal window. Making a clone is as simple as typing "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb"...

Re: Virus/Internet Protection Software
MrAl do you have high speed Internet? A home router? If so you already have a firewall by virtue of NAT. You don't have outbound protection but depending on your router it can be added or configured. If you're really serious about security and don't want to slow down your computer and have an old co...

Re: Virus/Internet Protection Software
MrAl you obviously have a concern or need that is keeping you at SP1 but unless you have a known incompatibility that would hose your system I would advise against not updating to SP2 or better yet SP3. The first part of staying secure is staying up to date. Leaving your system un-patched widens you...

Re: Help restoring bookmarks, please ?
Glad to be of service. For the record the Bookmark file you want is: Places > Computer > Filesystem > Home > externet > View > Show hidden files > .mozilla > firefox > mej7k7lx.default > bookmarks.html You can also use Firefox -> Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Export HTML.

Re: Help restoring bookmarks, please ?
Bookmark backups wasn't the latest version of your bookmarks but it will do if you've already overwritten the drive which you seem to have done. To import your bookmarks open Firefox, click Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks, Import and Backup and finally Import HMTL. Done. Select only the most recent ba...

Re: Virus/Internet Protection Software
In the past I've used AVG Free and Avast antivirus with varying degrees of success. Recently Microsoft released it's own antivirus software, Microsoft Security Essentials , which is what I would use. Using Microsoft Security Essentials removes pretty much all doubt of compatibility issues, should al...

Re: Another Resource
Odd, the first time I visited the site my browser (Firefox) went right to it, I just clicked the bookmark I had for the site and got the warning previously mentioned. McAfee's Site Advisor gives the site a clean bill of health ( McAfee - Matelectronics.com ) but the same cannot be said of Google, Go...

Re: switching users
It should be a setting in Control Panel->User Accounts. Select "Change the way users log in/out" and enable fast user switching.

Re: Audio Switch help?
It appears you would need at a minimum an I2c controller, likely in the form of a microcontroller. In the past I've used a 4066 to switch audio and video sources and it requires only a High signal to the corresponding switch input. Perhaps someone here with more technical knowledge than I have could...

Are you sure both ends (PIC and PC) are set to use the same baud rate?

Re: Water Cooling Power Resistors
Next test: Immerse a Pentium IV 2GHz CPU in the distilled water, run a chess program, measure temperature rise... (just kidding) I'm guessing water wouldn't be a good idea but there are hobbyist who submerge their PCs in mineral oil for cooling. There are kits to make "fishtank" P...

When did you recieve your most recent issue of N&V
As of mid August I'm again a subscriber of Nuts & Volts and I'm anxiously awaiting my "first" issue. When did everyone get there most recent issue? I'm trying to gauge when to expect N&V to be in my mailbox. Thanks!

Re: Emulate a Keyboard with a Notebook PC?
A very quick Google search didn't turn up much but I did think of a few methods that require little more then a uC and a cable. MicroRem, cpbiomed are either of you handy with a uC? It's a bit o a kludge but I envision essentially a USB to RS232 converter piped into a PS/2 interface. On the laptop y...
