Save those displays!

Thought I would share one of my projects that I finished today...

This one took only a few days and was quite fun. The project mainly dealt with interfacing to a Hitatchi 44780 based LCD.
This was a simple display I took off a coffee maker at work that ate it last week.
No coffee for 2 days!
I plan on using this project in others... If you see any of these displays around in a junk pile.. pick them up! I want it!

my router just died.
never buy a linksys router.. belkin is much better. my opinion.

That must have been some coffee maker, 2 line vac flourescent display. It sure beats the clock on a MrCoffee.
I met an artist once at a party in Half Moon Bay. He put a few of these around the room scrolling messages he thought were important. IMO, The important part was it got him lots of conversations with the ladies. Who knew?

It was the ferrari of coffee makers.
They had this thing parked in the executive break room right next to the massage specialist. "Engineers/techs were not allowed to go in here..
"
I picked off a lot of sensors off this thing too...
You should see the new model that they bought... I think it has a built-in rfid tag reader to tell you where the closest coffee bean bag is. If I get past the guard to the break room, I'll take a picture of it to show you.

Wow, and a Noritake VFD at that. Those are generally expensive HD44780 compatiable VFDs that are quite simple to control.
Great job getting that to work. I would have never though to look in modern consumer grade equipment for that kind of high end stuff. They generally all use custom ASICs and cheapo vfd / lcd displays.
