Internet radio question.

Post by dacflyer »

Boy, things on here have been slow for a while..
I just got back from europe a few weeks ago, and i seen that internet radios have become really popular.
So when i got back home here, I started looking for one of my own..
I'm not really finding what i want.. I'd like something that connects to my stereo..
In the past i have been using my old tablet, which is ok,, I save my favorites to my bookmarks.
I'm kinda looking for something with a bigger display than 2.5" 3 or 4 inches would be nice.
Anyone have some suggestions? How hard would it be to DIY my own ?
If i had something easier to use that incorporated into my old tablet, that could be an option..

Hi dacflyer.
I know very little about this now, but :
A few years ago, I put to use a 'smart' phone with no cellular service to the internet using its WiFi link as connection.
By the nineties, I used to record a lot of music from a web site named www.sky.fm defunct now but with many modern replacements as www.last.fm; grooveshark ... like ----> https://www.radiotunes.com/
Your old tablet or a smart phone device working the web with its wifi should be able to connect its earphone output to your stereo AUX input.

Give it a try and come back with findings. Good chance is modern receivers/stereos have now access to the web but as a dinosaur I am, am not familiar.with modern stuff.

Do you know how to save your bookmarks and edit them as HTML? Your saved bookmarks could be your home page and then you could open each up in a new tab. Would save a lot of time. Let me know if you want help, as I just did something similar for the pages I like to listen to. Here's a single line for example:

Code: Select all

<A HREF="https://labgateradio.com/" TARGET="_blank">Home - 8 stations</A>
The big key is the TARGET = " _blank ", as that will pop it out in a new tab.
Hey, what do I know?

i have several saved bookmarks. I just have to open the bookmarks, then just pick which one i wanna listen too, then wait for it to load, then press play... Most auto play, but others you must press play..

Here. I've trimmed this down to the absolute bare minimum to form a launch page for some of the things I listen to. It's basically just a "link farm" that uses almost no resources. It will just sit there until you come back to it. And each link will load in a new tab. It's very easy to edit in Notepad. Just copy the code into notepad and save it as something like "Home.html". It will launch in your default browser. Give it a try and see if it's useful to you.

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
<TITLE>Listen</TITLE>
<H1>Listen</H1>
            <DT><A HREF="https://www.mixcloud.com/robert-drake/land-of-the-lost-april-2021/" TARGET="_blank">Land of the Lost - April 2021 by Robert Drake | Mixcloud</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://labgateradio.com/" TARGET="_blank">Home - 8 stations</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://directory.shoutcast.com/Search#100%%20PROGRESSIVE%20ROCK" TARGET="_blank">SHOUTcast - Search</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://wmgk.com/" TARGET="_blank">102.9 WMGK - Philadelphia&#39;s Classic Rock 102.9 WMGK</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://1075frank.com/" TARGET="_blank">107.5 Frank - Maine&#39;s #1 For Classic Hits</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://kzok.iheart.com/" TARGET="_blank">102.5 KZOK - Seattle&#39;s Classic Rock Station</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://www.audacy.com/wysp/listen#schedule" TARGET="_blank">WYSP - Rocks - LISTEN LIVE | Audacy</A>
            <DT><A HREF="https://wmmr.com/" TARGET="_blank">93.3 WMMR - Everything That Rocks!</A>

This will work as its HTML 3 compliant (not even sure if we're still HTML 5 or beyond, I'll have to check that out).

It's rather straightforward.
TITLE refers to what you see in the tab of the window frame.
H1 (as shown in the example) is the first piece of text and has the font style of Heading 1 ie H1 - bold and large.
Within all the DT (description terms, which are supposed to used in a description list DL) are the links to the pages.
These links are comprised of 3 things:
The A HREF= " " is where you put the actual web address
The Target= _blank which pops the link into a new tab or window, depending on browser.
And then at the end between the > </A> is the text to display on the page for the link.
And really, that's it.

Easiest way for the person curating the list is to start at the top link and modify the Web address (copy n paste works great) and give it a descriptive name. Then Bob's your uncle.
Keep going down the line, adding however many you need, just copying the web address from the page you want to bookmark.

All it is is a launch page, but it can be much quicker than grabbing the drop down menu. And you can further customize it if you want to learn more about HTML. Plus, if you know MS Word, you know some of the things you can do in HTML.

ok,, that's the issue, i don't know HTML at all..
what you're trying to explain to me. I'm not knowing where to look in my Tablet for it.
In a web page i bring up ( radio station I listen to, I just click the star to save it to my favorites.
Then later on, in my bookmarks, I just click the station i wanna listen to. Then it shows up, then i click the play button..
I use mostly a world radio station site called....

https://www.surfmusik.de/webradio/deutschland.html
radio links from all over the world.. I listen to mostly from Austria , Germany or from around the states..
fairly simple, no spam or disruptive ads.. Been using it for a several years now.

Using the tablet is ok, just really no place to sit it, the charger port in on the bottom and the audio port is on top. so it lays on top of the stereo. That's why I was kinda looking for a box top internet radio..

Ah, ok.
How about building a frame for the tablet that allows the plugs to be inserted (maybe switch to right angle plugs) yet still stand vertically or slightly angled back? I mean, if it works as is and is just an ergonomic issue, that should solve it.

Even if you find a frame for it that doesn't have quite enough room on the bottom, a small wooden riser with space left open for the bottom plug should be easy to fab out of some scrap wood.

Here's to happy listening!

A phone or tablet and bluetooth speaker is the most natural choice today, but you can also find this feature built into home theater Audio Amplifiers and Blue ray players and even Google and Fire TV via installed apps. Smart speakers support this too though you may need to speak the name of the station. There are also websites you can access with a laptop or desktop.
