Digital Multimeter Ribbon Cable Connection

Post by NV014454 »

In the attached drawing the ribbon cable going to the display has been disconnected from the printed circuit traces. There is no evidence of solder which has secured the cable to the traces. The only evidence of an electrical connection between the cable and the traces is a black carbon-like film on the end of the cable. How is the cable secured to the pc traces?

Okay,

Anyone else consider this posting suspicious?
I looked at NV014454's profile.
It says joined in 2013, but this is the first post?

Very suspicious.....

I've checked the post and there's nothing out of the ordinary and the pic link is the same format as if you were to add an attachment to your post.

NV014454 may be a longtime lurker, but it's good to see some newer content. If you're out there NV014454, give a shout.
Hey, what do I know?

Would not be any solder for "black" trace connection to gold pads. Connection is by pressure. The 3 black spots are where the pressure plate broke off, or the plate is out of view on the back side. (but then why gold pads on this side?) Or they are screw holes for LCD bezel (to the left), but I don't see non-conductive foam that held ribbon down.

Was multimeter pried apart?

((I checked source html of the post earlier. No hidden links.))

I did not notice any type of plate holding the ribbon cable to the pc board. I suspect the cable was secured to the pc board by pressure supplied by the carbon film on the tips of the ribbon cable. If this is true, where can this type of adhesive be obtained?

This has to be it; but residues would need to be cleaned before re-applying :

And fine hand skills, avoid shorting pads !

I think your right Externet....
When you click on the Picture and then Zoom in on the copper pads, then look at the damaged ribbon cable ends.
You can see the how it had been glued on to the copper pads on the PCB.

If it was me, I'd see if I could replace the ribbon cable with a heavier cable.
Think of using a old 40 wire standard IDE Hard Drive Cable, soldering the wires on to the copper pads.
Then put hot glue, or black tape over the ends to keep them from breaking loose from the PCB.
