Been googling (on the old XP machine) this problem with a newer Win 10 Gateway desktop, but to no avail.
It had been working fine for many months since the Win8 to Win10 upgrade, but now this:
Powers up to the background scene, with a responsive cursor, but no icons or desktop appears.
Tried:
1) CTLR and my PIN and ENTER
2) F12 on start to get to SAFE MODE
3) F2 on startup
4) Power button on/off
5) unplug PC power and reconnect
6) short prayer
Nothing works. Any other ideas out there?
Thanks!
John

Thanks dacflyer!
Resolved!
What happened is Win10 was trying to install an update. After waiting with the blank screen (about 20 minutes), a display came on saying, "Almost Finished!". The whole update took about half hour.
Scheesh.

From what I hear from those that know, Win 10 updates are forced on you. You don't get to pick whether they get installed or not.
You're probably wise to wait and see before switching to Win 10.
