Sysop Note: Logon Amnesia

Post by Lenp »

When I am logged in, my screen name is in the upper right corner. When I create a new post or reply to a post the first time during a session, I can enter the post but when going to Preview or Submit I am again required to login. When back at the screen all of the previous entry is gone.
Is this a system hiccup, a subtle user memory test or a spam deterrent?

This problem has been reported by several users. I've tried researching what is happening but haven't had any success. I've asked a phpbb developer what could be going on so hopefully I get a reply and can fix this problem this week. I will keep you updated.

Just about the time I used all my reserve stock of Damm-it-all's....The problem seemed to go away!
Guess it worked, but I'll need to restock to ward off he obvious onrush of spammers.....

Seems like the time window when logging in is very short to post something elaborated. The web site wants the user logged-in with the 'Remember me' selected to override the amnesia.
But even with the 'Remember me' selected, if you turn your computer off; drops the login and does not remember the user next visit. And it is not only this site.
I believe disconnecting the wired internet, turning the modem or router off, triggers the same amnesia.

So now the web sites dictate that we should or not turn off our computers. Mine is off overnight.

Edited- Did not select 'Remember me when logged-in this time. When submitting this post, sent me to login. Instead, hit 'back' on the browser and was able to copy all was typed. Then, logged in again and pasted.

This happened twice (also after the Edit)

I've had this happen only once or twice, and that was when there was an update and EVERY ONE was having that problem. I use Win7, Win8, and Android. Browsers are either IE or Chrome.

Now, if I don't use a system for more than, let's say 2-3 weeks, I'll have to login again, but I stay logged in after that.

For everyone who has this problem, do you routinely empty your browser cache or use blockers? Is this forum on your Whitelist? I'm just trying to figure out why I have no real problems while others have had chronic problems for years.

BTW, Happy New Year 2019!

If this problem is happening to anyone reading this, please detail the exact problem you're having (with as much criteria as you can include), in this thread.

I've been working on the problem but it is extremely hard to replicate since I'm not having the issue. It seems like the problem is only happening to a few people so the more information on operating systems, web browsers, and settings you can include, the better I can get to the bottom of this.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Sean,
To make it harder to isolate, I've not had the problem in the last week or so.
Did you make any changes? None were made on this end.

We've tried changing some settings in regards to cookies which seemed to help in the back end but since I'm not having problems on the board side, I cannot see if it fixed anything. I'm not sure if this is a board setting that needs to be changed or if it is a problem with individual users. I hear this complaint from a few people but it definitely is not happening to everyone. I'm using firefox but don't seem to have trouble in Chrome, Edge, or IE.

Win 10, using Chrome. I've been away for a few months, but have the logon problem lately. It is as the OP describes. I have to logon while I am already logged on, but to reply, must logon again.

Same issue again, logged on and needed to login again to preview and submit response.
It looks like you have to click 'Remember Me' not only to be recognized at a new login, but also to avoid amnesia during the same session. That sure looks like a bug or a security option set too restrictive.
FYI Different browsers made no difference.
