OK here's my version using two 2N3904's in a darlington configuration.
With the component values shown:
Gain = 10, load 10K
Max output = 2 volts rms before distortion begins
Current drain = .5ma
Input Impedance = 100K

Well, son didn't bring guitar as requested, so I'll have to go to storage and hopefully find the one he told us to hold onto until he buys a house. And even then, I don't know if I have a 1/4 plug. I'll figure something out. No worries.
