LM386 Bass Boost Question

Post by CeaSaR »

I am looking to make some small gifts this year and have settled on the venerable LM386N-3. One
of the options on the datasheet shows a bass boost between pin 5 and pin 7, using a 0.033 uF cap
and a 10 kOhm resistor. Problem is, I cannot find the 0.033 uF cap on Mouser. What would I need to
change the 10 kOhm resistor to if I used a 0.33 uF cap? My mind is a blank right now and I need to
get the parts ordered soon.

See page 6 of the datasheet above for the available options.

Thanks in advance,

Or three 0.01uF in parallel and the 10K resistor. Given the tolerances of capacitors, it will be just as close as a single 0.033uF.

Page 2 on the gain control section doesn't recommend anything smaller then 10K if pins 1 and 8 are not bypassed. I would keep the components as designed.
Seriously you can't find a .033uf cap from Mouser. :o I just checked their site and found 164 in stock, of different types and manufacturers. The Mouser part no. below should fill the bill.

Thanks guys. Didn't want to use multiples and for some bizarre reason, Mouser wouldn't show any 0.033 uF
caps either through search or the value selection when I went straight to the cap section. I tried 4 or 5 times.
Thought I was losing it.

Again, thanks.

Another thought ... if 0.033uF doesn't show on Mouser try 33nF or 33000pF; same value with the decimal point moved.

I put in what Steve suggested. Lo and behold, there were many to choose from if I got rid of the
space between 0.033 and uF. Even the value selection worked. Strangeness...

I have about 100 or more .033uF film capacitors. They are rectangle shaped 0.5" by 0.15" by .35 and have 1/2 inch leads. I would be happy to send you a bunch.

I thank you for the kind offer Ned. They are only pennies apiece and I only need a few,
so I'm going to get them from Mouser.
