Converting DVD movies

Post by sobeit »

Hello again guys,
As you know I,m not a software nor programming expert, but I am learning. I need a suggestion on how to convert a recorded DVD movie AVI. ISO, etc. to MP4 and be able to play it through my DVD Player. I was using Nero but that program seems to keep asking me to pay to update. I now have "Sonic Record Now" and I love the quickness of the burning, but its not converting or encoding the DVD movie to play in my home player. It will play through the computer. And I have Windows XP Pro. I very much appreciate all of your suggestions.
Thanks guys,

Tony

Tony,

First....
Did you finalize the DVD Disc after you burned it?
If you don't finalize the DVD Disc, you can only view it on the machine that did the actual burning of the Disc.
Note: You can burn more video/audio/data to the Disc if you haven't finalized yet.
But after it is finalized, it can't be re-burned to add on to it.

Second....
If you did finalize the Disc, and it still won't play.
How old is the DVD Player?
If it is older that 5 years, there is a good chance it doesn't support MP4.
Check the manual, and see if it does or doesn't support MP4.
Or simply try it in a newer DVD Player.

Hello Janitor Tzap,
I thank you for the tip of running the finalizing. Like I mention this is all new to me. I found the Finalizing mode to run and did both DVD's and I still was not able to play them, kept getting an "error" message. My Player is three years old and it played the movies I burnt from Nero but it took three hours to convert and burn. But the Nero program won't let me continue without paying for an update. I have a JVC DVD player and read the manual and it does play MP4 and other's. If you have any suggestions as for what program I should use please let me know. I really thank you for your input. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

Tony,

I've used Nero but not "Sonic Record Now" for making DVD's of old Tapes I had.

Can you still view the DVD's on the machine you burned them on?
If yes, then the Finalization of the disk didn't take.
If you can't even view it on the machine you burned it on.
You just made yourself some drink coasters.

Here's the deal........
Before you burn the video to the DVD + -R.
Find out what is the capacity of the DVD.
Single Sided are around 4.7Gig or about 2 hours in MP2.
Double Sided are 9.4Gig or about 4 hours in MP2.

Next find out the running time of your video.
The Format you use MP4, AVI, etc.....
Will determine how much space it will need on the DVD Disc.
Note: The higher the quality, the more space you'll need.

Nero has a nice tool with they're software that will tell you if can,
or can not do a burn to a certain size DVD Disc in a certain Format.
This also includes the space required for the finalizing of the DVD Disc.

Thus, I suspect you burned the video too a DVD Disc that doesn't have enough room
left to do the finalization as well.

Janitor Tzap,
First off, thanks for your inputs. I did what you suggested with the Finalization, and yes I can still view it from the source I burned it from. You also said that it may not be Finalized, I did put them through a second time and a window came up with a notice that I need to put a proper DVD in to finalize the one it see's has been formatted. The DVD's I have are Memorex-120 min.-DVD-R. And I had more than enough room for the movie and to Finalize it. I also can't seem to find any type of settings in the Sonic program, it's like it is pre-set to it's own default settings. I'll see if I can get the Nero back and use it again and pay for the update it needs to get a proper DVD movie formatted and Encoded.
Thanks again for your input, any more idea's let me know.
Much Appreciated for suggestions.

Hey Tzap,
I found a program like Nero but better, it's called Convert-X-DVD. This program was worth the money and I am very satisfied with it, (So Far). It's user friendly, a little bit of reading to understand the software, and burns good quality DVD's.
I appreciate all your suggestions and help with this, and just giving you heads-up from my end.
Thanks again,
Tony

That's good that you found something that will work for you.

Yeah,
It can get daunting about all the details you have to take in account before you can burn a DVD Disc.
There are all the different formats to chose from.
Setting the aspect ratio, frame rates, resolution,
just so you can fit it on to the one DVD Disc.
And yet it doesn't look crappy when played.

I suggest that you go and get some Double Sided 9.4Gig 280 minute DVD Disc's.
Instead of trying to cram the movies onto Single Sided 4.7Gig 120 minute DVD Disc's that you currently have.
The reason being that your using MP4, which is a High Quality Format.
And it requires more Disc space then most of the other Formats.
Thus, if a movie runs 2 hours - 120 minutes.
But your burning it too a Single Sided 4.7Gig 120 minute DVD Disc.
There is no room left on the Disc to Finalize it.

Just something you should keep in mind.
