Recommendations for free web hosting

Post by CeaSaR »

Hi guys,

After umpteen years as the one of the oldest and most known free web hosting communities
around, Yahoo! GeoCities will be closing later this year. Direct quote from Yahoo!:

**********

"Important Announcement
After careful consideration, Yahoo! has decided to close GeoCities later this year.

You can continue enjoying your GeoCities service until then — we just wanted you to let you
know about the closure as soon as possible. We'll share more details this summer. For now,
please visit the help center for more information."

**********

For me, this means I have to find a new home for my tiny little site. While I have practically nil
visitors, I still wish to share some of my work with the world, should anyone wish to view/use it.
AND, since I make no money from this little side hobby, it really should be free hosting if possible.
I have done some leg work already, and would like to know if anyone has heard of or used sqweebs.com.
They seem to have everything I need and then way more. I had looked at some others that have been
around for a while (Freewebz, Bravenet and a few others), but they won't host the file types I need
(all the regular html files along with some ZIP and possibly MP3 files, all original).

Any recommendations and/or warnings etc. are heartily welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

CeaSaR

The Sqweebs.com ratings are actually pretty decent with a 95 out of a possible 125 considering many free webs hit in the 50 to 60 range. I can't say I use them or are really familiar with them other than the ratings.

Worst case scenario for a nice little simple web would be paid webspace through an outfit like 1 and 1 web hosting, Go Daddy, or similar reasonably priced site at about $60 a year. Many of them you are looking at in this area run about $5.00 a month. Granted not free but pretty reasonable.

Well, I haven't changed hosts yet, but I have updated my software page.
JustaClock - the Cuckoo clock program I wrote (with a little help) has been
added along with an additional download of the OCX and DLL files that any
user of my software "might" need. Just click my profile and follow the link
from there. I'll update again when I find a new provider.

Yeah Ron, lotsa memories. I remember being single digits going in there with the family
and sitting at the booths. I always wanted a quarter for the tableside jukebox, mostly
to hear Bowie's Space Oddity. Then all the other wonderful memories through my teens
and 20's. After that it was so-so for quite a while. Then about 8 years ago I started
taking my family there and really enjoyed the changes. Unfortunately, the owners
of the lot and the physical Diner sold out to a Walgreen's drug store. The Diner itself is
stored about a mile away from it's original spot. The owners hope to use it as a front
entrance to another *multi-story* restaurant.

I'm still on the lookout for a good family Diner in my area that has reasonable prices.
Seems to be a thing of the past, though.

Thanks for allowing my trip down Memory Lane.

I thought I had better make my website(s) a bit easier to get to for those
who wish to view them, so I pasted the actual links below. That way, no one
has to click through other pages to get to them. They are:

Homepage:
http://www.geocities.com/bergermeister1st/index.htm

Software page:
http://www.geocities.com/ceasarsoftware/index.html

Since I am seaching for a new host, use the above links until I move my site(s).
I will update everything when the migration is complete.

I had the same problem. went with angelfire. Over it's good with the exception of their on-line web authoring tools. YUCK.

Took a look at Angelfire, but couldn't find a list of allowed filetypes. Do you
have the listing or is it available to the general public somewhere?

Thanks in advance,

no, I don't. It's seems to be pretty permissive, though. Geocities was a PITA - they were sooo restrictive.

I switched to http://50webs.com but my site at geocities was getting to the point that I had to save files in .jpg to save space. For a small site like that you might try http://free.prohosting.com/ that offers 100 mb's but only one page. Or maybe bravenet.com that offers 50 mb's. I don't have a file type list on 50webs but they allow software and mp3's.
: Answer: As long as you have created the software or the MP3 files and they do not exceed the maximum filesize quota(500k), yes - you are allowed to do so.
I do have problems with java applets on 50webs though.

I think I may have found a webspace provider to go with: free0host.com.
They seem to have most of what I am looking for and have a rating
of 101 (out of 125). Sqweebs.com has more of what I would like, but they
have the caveat of needing "one visitor each week (this can be yourself).
If you didn't get a visitor in a week time, your account will be disabled."
That means that if I go on vacation, my site might be disabled due to me
not being able to check in. Kinda bites if you ask me. Besides, they "only"
have a 95 rating.

I have to dig a little deeper before I commit to them, so I'll let you know
what I find out about them.

I looked at 50webs, they missed my price point (free).
Free.Prohosting doesn't allow the files I want to use (.ZIP, MP3 or WAV).
I had already looked at Bravenet, same file problems, though they do have
good add-ons to use with your site. My wife has used them for years.

Thanks so far for the help,

How about Link:Google Sites? It's free, you know it will be around for a while, 10GB storage and you can store/serve just about any filetype. The only limit I've seen is that free accounts can only upload 10MB files. If you have tolerant viewers and/or family members you could always split larger files into fixed sized archives.

I tested angel fire - zips are fine. In fact they seem to have no restrictions at all on the upload (*.*).

I'll check out free0host. At least they had philba available!

Well, it's official.
Yahoo! wrote:GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009.
On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.
Still haven't decided on which host to use. I guess I better get on the stick and do it soon.

Well, the day is here and I have been feverishly saving what I can of those sites I have bookmarked on
GeoCities. I must have been pretty heavy on some as I think I hit their bandwidth limits (error 503?). As
such, my site will be gone soon. No fear, I will republish at some point, somewhere.

Until then, goodbye GeoCities. You were a good friend to me.

Still here,
