At the very low-end there's this:

X/Y Table built from CD/DVD drive mechnisms

A step up would be this:

And, of course, my personal favorite would be this 3-axis system from Probotix:

Checkout cnczone.com there are a lot of plans floating around for everything from building with hardware store parts to ground shaft and bearings.
