It's a digital world after all!

Post by Engineer1138 »

Let me preface this by saying I love microcontrollers and firmware! Heck, I even got a Master's in Software Engineering.

So why do I feel obsolete?
Well, after spending the weekend getting a nice low-level light detector circuit working using a high-intensity red LED and a cheap LM324 opamp with one channel giving gain and another acting as a comparator so I could feed it into an AVR, I discover this: http://www.mouser.com/taos/
Everything I could need, wrapped up into a nice little package selling for $1.37 in single units! And the only reason I even needed the AVR was because a 555 couldn't handle the time delay (the project is to turn on the light in a chicken coop for 3 hours when it got dark outside so the hens have enough light to trigger their laying instinct as the days get shorter).

No-one, it seems, except for chip manufacturers needs people with analog expertise anymore. I guess it took a light detector with I2C output for $1.37 to drive that through my thick skull :-)

I'll just go back into my quiet little corner and keep churning out code!

Hi there,

What part number are you talking about there? The only one
i could find on Mouser that was 1.37 did not have a data sheet
or the link was broken to the data sheet. Do you have a data
sheet and part number?
LEDs vs Bulbs, LEDs are winning.

I don't remember specifically which one I was looking at, but you can get the datasheets at www.taosinc.com

I do love the level of integration they achieve though!

I recently ordered some parts for a project...
I must say I was impressed of there capabilities from the spec sheet.

IR Transceiver
http://www.datasheetcatalog.com/datashe ... -TT3.shtml

Buck/Boost Switch-Mode Regulator
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/p ... 00-q1.html

No need to get my hands dirty with analog!

I cant wait to get this board up and running!
