I've just discovered that some flash drives don't report themselves as mass storage devices but as hubs. This seems to be a bigger problem for Linux users, but if you have a USB stick that works on some systems but not others, or a USB drive (powered type), then this might be the reason.
I found this only recently by purchasing the new Microchip Pic24F starter kit, plugged my 256MB flash stick in, only for it to be rejected as it was reported as a hub.
Some research and help via the Piclist pointed me to the above information.

most computers will recognise my flash drives, but at work, the new all in one computers will not recognise my flash drives for some reason.
you can see it recognise it as new hardware, and that it installs the drivers for it,.,.but you can never see the drive in MY COMPUTER
these computers is running xp.
IT can get them to come up,,but they have to go thru a bunch of hoops. not worth the hassle from IT dept,, they ask too many questions for simple stuff..Grrrr

Here's a few suggestions you can try.
First: Does the computer that your plugging the drive into have a USB printer plugged into a port?
Yes?
Then make sure the printer is turned off.
Before you plug in the Thumb Drive.
With the printer off, can you now see the Thumb Drive?
Yes?
Then you have a port conflict with the USB Printer and the Thumb Drive.
Try switching the printer to another port.
{If you are capable of using a parallel port, switch it to that one for the printer.}
Still not seeing the Thumb Drive?
Well is the computer on a network?
Yes?
Try disconnecting it from the network.
Then restart the computer with the Thumb Drive plugged in.
Can you see it now?
Yes?
Well that would suggest a problem with drive letter assignments.
The Thumb Drive is trying to use an already assigned drive letter.
A program from MicroSoft: Tweakui Power Tools can help you assign an open drive letter for the Thumb Drive.
Still not it?
Well there are several topic's about "USB Thumb Drives not being recognized".
That showed up in a google search I just did.
So, your not alone in this.
Good Luck.
