Formulas & triangles...

Post by Externet »

Hi all
The Ohm's law is frequently memorized with the triangle graphic, and there is many other formulas which can also be expressed that way. Never seen them published this way, and I thought it would be nice to have the family together.

If someone please is good at drawings with compfusers and can make neat pictorials for all the following, it would be a good helpful thing to have that so beginners (and not) can print and hang up by the bench :

V
I R
V= Voltage in Volts, I=intensity in Amperes, R=resistance in Ohms

Q
C V
Q=Charge in Coulombs, C=capacity in Farads, V= Voltage in Volts

Q
I T
Q=Charge in Coulombs, I=intensity in Amperes, T=time in seconds

E
V Q
E= Energy in Joules, V= Voltage in Volts, Q=Charge in Coulombs

P
V I
P=power in Watts, V= Voltage in Volts, I=intensity in Amperes

E
P T
E= Energy in Joules, P=power in Watts, T=time in seconds

W
P T
W= Work in Joules/second*, P=power in Watts, T=time in seconds

c
f L
c=propagation speed, f=frequency in cycles/second, L=wavelenght

Z L
6.28f L
ZL= capacitive impedance in Ohms, f=frequency in cycles/second L=inductance in Henrys

If the pictorials end all like the triangle shown here:
http://o.mneina.googlepages.com/Electronics_basics.htm
would be great !
Will think of which other triangles can be added...

*Not totally sure about this
Thanks,
Miguel

Thanks, Steve, good job !

How do you do the drawings? Can I edit/add/do corrections or takes too much expertise to do changes? Am bad with compfusers.

I may want to replace one "L" with lambda "" and other minor things... I also goofed with Zl = should say 'inductive' ; Amps to Amperes, etc.

Correction requested in the lower right triangle: ZL = Inductive impedance.

Thanks ,correction noted!

Miguel,
I copied the triangle from your link into "Paint" and replaced the color.
Used the appropriate font size and text style to match.
Font is "Century", "36" size and "Western" style for the big letters.
Use "12" size for the small letters.

After opening up the attachment right click and select "copy". You can then paste this into Paint and modify as needed.

Thanks again, Steve. Paint... Paint... does not work with Linux. I will remove the spider webs from my Windows hard drive and cross fingers... will be back...

Done, after some sweat, but done.
If anyone wants it in .jpg I can email it.

Until I edit it again, or add something, or someone improves it, or...

Miguel,

You have 2 contradictory equations, E=PT and W=PT. Remove the W=PT one. The E=PT is right. :)

Had my suspicion about it, found contradictory versions on text books, never got it clear.

Just did a quick search, page 98 here:
http://books.google.com/books?id=oCtw-L ... ei9A&hl=en
shows W=Pt in red by the middle of the page.
Someday I will get it.

Now I'm getting confused. :o The book equates Work with Energy. So W=PT may be true but W is not expressed in joules/second, just joules.

I remember Mr. Breen my old high school physics teacher hammering one point over and over "Power is the ability to do work". That confused me. It wasn't an equation, and I've never had the need to calculate values of "work" ever since, just energy which is apparantly the same thing.

Poor guy. He had a heart attack and died on the street downtown.

Just a quick note to sghioto,

Windows Paint from at least 98SE up has the option to Save As a .JPG file
along with .BMP and .TIF and .PNG, should you need that info.

All -

How about these.

The MAGIC word learned in High School math..SOHCAHTOA

Soh - Cah - Toa

SINE = Opposite over Hypotenuse SOH
Cosine = Adjacent over Hypotenuse CAH
Tangent = Opposite over Adjacent TOA

An old timer.

How about memorising the order of the planets?

In grade 4 we were taught:

Man Very Early Made Jars Stand Up Nearly Perpendicular.

A couple of years ago I saw a better one:

My Very Easy Method- Just Set Up Nine Planets.
