Solving the problem - way OT threads with abusive behavior

Post by philba »

Mr Al, I know your proposal is a good faith attempt to solve the problem in this thread http://forum.servomagazine.com/viewtopic.php?t=7475 while trying to meet the OPs needs. The problem is that the thread has run so far off the rails that there, IMHO, no righting it. Trying to be a nice guy here is doomed to failure. Sorry, I call it like I see it.

Here is my proposal for solving this problem. I doubt forum management will accept it, though.

- Create an acceptable use policy forbidding abusive, racist or otherwise unacceptable behavior.
- Threads that have policy violations get locked (but not deleted). Anything that violates forum policy get's so noted by the moderator in the thread.
- Individuals who violate policy get a warning.
- anyone who receives 3 warnings (ever) gets booted from the forum
- record IP addresses so people can't come back with a different name.

Most people will straighten out after the first warning. Anyone who can't should simply be gone.

Mr.Al
I think you're doing a fine job.

You have to be very careful about any attempt to censure posts.
Kicking people off and threatening them is a sure fire way to boredom.
Also, when you kick up the dust you often see aspects of things you
never thought possible.
Are you SURE you want to shut this place down to a dry and technical
discussion forum? You want to suck the life out of it?
If Mr.Al started deciding which posts are acceptable and which are not
it would become Mr.Al's forum would it not?
Think about it.

Ian, your definitely catching on.

Controversy makes the mind work harder.

Agreement make lemmings out of otherwise smart people.

MrAl
Just hand over the moderators responsibilty to me for just one hour and i will solve all the problems. After one hour, I will hand it back to you as I really don't want it on a permanent basis. Ha-Ha

I agree that censorship is bad but this is not about arbitrary behavior on the moderators' part but rather setting an acceptable use policy and sticking to it. There are many places where arbitrary speech is not allowed. Shouting "Fire" in a crowded theater, for example. More apropos to this discussion, obscenities in many venues are not allowed. When the discussion turns rude and abusive, there needs to be consequences. The individual in question is clearly hindering the free flow of information by constantly attacking others. If I were N&V, I'd boot his butt off of here. There is a reason why he doesn't show up on other electronics forums (fori?). Like I've said before, until that happens, this forum will continue to be an also ran in the world of electronics forums. But don't anyone hold their breath.

I cant wait for you to find it.

Obviously you haven’t figured out the difference yet between god and religion, but your comments as hallow as they are, ....are as usual, ....funny.

And you wonder why you cant answer my posts?

Try reading them a little closer and leave out the “between the linesâ€

Don’t cry on my shoulder.

I can quote you the exact phrase and it has nothing to do with what you just said.

Thats easy, and over fifty years old.

I don’t believe in any religion.

Huge difference between god, and religion.

Man made or written crap, is just crap.

Thousands of years worth of changing their minds, the words, misinterpretations, power, money, .....well, they just lost sight of the real thing.

Gee, I wonder why?

Lets all send money to the televangelist?

He beats the pope by at least...?

One lying fart VS another.

Take it all a shove it where the sun don’t shine
