Primitive radio types

When I was a kid (back in ancient history) I built a crystal radio in Boy Scouts. This I understand, and there are lots of "kits" available. This is not what I want.

There were always stories around how soldiers in WWII made primitive recievers out of stuff lying around, and POW's making a radio out of practially nothing.

Now that I am retired, I would like to "amaze" my grandkids with something like this. They can have thier Ipods ect. I want to make something easy and off the wall, like using a potato for a power supply and a toilet paper roll with some wire wrapped around it.

Anyone have any sugestions (NO KITS) that may help?

A good starting point is the primitive crystal radios.

Check out some of the very old diagrams that use one exposed crystal, a ear phone because of the lack of output, and a lemon if you want some power?

You have to touch different parts of the exposed crystal to tune in the device, kind of like poking at the out side of an Air Comb Cap to tune in a channel.
