Does a choke look like a resistor?

Post by qdgjcl »

Does a choke look like a resistor? I have what looks like a green resistor and has color bands; brown, brown, black, gold. I was told that it is a 33mH choke. Is this true, and if it is, how do read them? <p>Thank you,<p>Brad

Some chokes look like a big resistor. Frequently the end will be stepped, that's a hint. But not always. Check at Newark, All Electronics, Jameco and the many other sites that advertise in N&V. Sometimes you have to be a detective to be a tech.

Brad:
How about more specifics as per SIZE…LxWxH and the end capping/terminating procedure as well as conformal coating and then get an ohmmeter and see how close U come to 11 ohms if/as assuming it to be a resistor:
http://webhome.idirect.com/~jadams/elec ... t_calc.htm <p>One might typically find sub microhenry and microhenry values in the ½ W resistor casing of sizes, but now 33mh that requires quite a bit more real estate to put it in. As well one would expect to see some orange bands in reference to the 33 coding.<p>

Brown, Brown, Black should be interpreted as 11 and no zeros, so it could be 11 picofarads (not likley), 11 ohms, or 11 microhenries. If the resistance is less than 11 ohms, it most likely is 11 uH.
