Hi Miguel,<p>Clamp-on ammeters which don't use a Hall effect device are simply a transfomer without the primary winding. When clamped round a conductor, the conductor forms the single turn primary. <p>David

Check out the UGN3503UA. I got one from Advantek, it is linear and quite sensitive.

And the clamp on current probes and ammeters that also respond to dc do use Hall-effect sensors. The original "Amprobe" brand of clamp-on current probes used the transformer concept as did the 50MHz Tektronix P6021 and 200MHz Tek P6022 current probes and "bottomed out" at around 125 Hz (P6021) or more. Later Tek current probes used a Hall-effect sensor for currents down to dc. <p>Dean
