I am using a 12v Dewalt Drill motor in my robotics project.
What are some good (cheap) bi-directinal motor controllers capable of handling ~30amps
Any circuits available?
Can I take a circuit for a 1-2amp motor controller and beef up all the components to handle 30amps?

Try Pololu.com or Paralax.com they both have serial DC motor controlers for around $30. Small foot print and easy to control

Yes you can as long as you match the parts that are bigger.
If your using a triac, find one with the same general specs but larger amperage rating, and package size.
Same goes for the Fet types, and even transistors can be done this way.
A little tweaking is some times required.

you can run a 12 DC motor with a H bridge circuit.. very easy to build and as Mr. Smith said.. make sure the FETS can take the load. not sure what a triac is.. but most any micro can run a H-bridge. i like servos personally.

A triac is a AC version of a SCR, [Silicone Controlled rectifier] used with AC applications to dim lights, control motor speeds etc.
They are small [to220] but they can handle heavy surges and high voltages.

Thank you for your replies. I am using DC motors so Triacs will not work for this applications. Regarding FETs or MOSFETs does the N and P pair (top and bottom of H-Bridge) have to have the same exact characteristics? Obviously both should be able to handle the current but does it matter if they are simmilar or not?
Can FETs be safely connected in parallel, to reduce the current through each?
