I will be adding more 3D printers as the series continues. These are the printers that I currently have access to:

PrintrBot Jr (I Own)
Rostock Max (I Own)
Solidoodle 2 (I Own)
Afinia (Loaner)

I also have access to a Replicator 2.

I am looking a getting a MakerGear M2.

At the end of the series I will do an indepth write up of my experiences with each machine.

I just ordered a MakerGear M2 kit.

Once the kit arrives I will post a few highlights in the series, but will provide detailed build notes on my website at:
http://www.kronosrobotics.com

I went through the instructions on the web site. They are not step-by-step, but look doable.

Michael,

A couple questions:

1. For the hobbyist that wants to print the occasional small part for a robot or other project, so far, which machine (or if not a specific machine, then what type of machine) would you recommend, taking into account up-front cost, consumable cost, resolution, etc.?

2. Assuming this series will run in Servo for 6 months, do you expect that after the second or third installment, most readers will be able to make a reasonably well informed purchase selection?

Thanks,

Win

If money is not object and you can live with the small build area I would go with the Afinia printer. It prodces the most acurate parts I have ever seen. This includes printers not included in this series.

If you cant afford the $1600 for the Afinia, look at the solidoodle 2 Pro. With some tuning you can print parts. They are not as accurate as the Afinia but by tweaking here and there you should be able to create the part you want. It also has a slightly larger build area.

I have a M2 on the way, I have a feeling this will be my goto printer.

In the third article I do prints on the Afinia, PrintrBot Jr, Solidoodle and the Rostock Max. You should have a good idea of how well each one prints.

By the fourth it is my hope to have the MakerGear M2 results.

Since my long term goal is to write an indepth book on 3D printing. I will be looking at other printers as time and funds permit. Check my website frequently.

Your clip for the bed/perf board on the Afinia is a great idea. Do you plan to post the model here?
