As stated in the article "Your safety and the safety of others should be the first priority as you build this project." There are some safety issues that can be eliminated by using UL listed electrical enclosures.
A 3 gang weatherproof electrical junction box such as Garvin WP3G507 <http://www.garvinindustries.com/weather ... ifications>
would be a far sturdier and safer enclosure than a food storage container mentioned in the article.The junction box costs more, but it won't be as easily opened or crushed if stepped on as the food storage container. It can easily be connected to 2 two gang weather proof junction boxes, each housing 2 duplex receptacle for a total of eight individually controllable outlets that the lights can plug into. (You can split a duplex receptacle into two individual receptacles by cutting a strap on the receptacle.) That eliminates the cut extension cords and makes it easier to get the neutral/hot polarity correct. Weatherproof receptacle covers complete the installation.
