Post by kb3ejv »

Looking for a schematic for a LED S-meter. Would like to have one to replace a no working needle type of s meter.

Would that be a bar graph or a digital readout (like a clock)?

BAMMMMMMMM. . . . . .!!!

KB3ejv. . . . . .meet. . . . . N6ZAV

Considering a Bar indicator being satisfactory and that you REALLY don't need a digital. . . .S9 + .1596. . . .readout,
( me. . . . I don't like bobbling digits) .

A 40 Segment LED Bar S-Meter (or less ...if you scale down some decades, but, what the heck, why not go for it. . .the WHOLE enchilada !

That's not an S-Meter as defined by the
IARU, it's a blinky lights box.

Here's the required S-Meter response:

Code: Select all

S-reading EMF (μV 50Ω) dBm dB above 1uV
S9+10dB 160.0 -63 44
S9 50.2 -73 34
S8 25.1 -79 28
S7 12.6 -85 22
S6 6.3 -91 16
S5 3.2 -97 10
S4 1.6 -103 4
S3 0.8 -109 -2
S2 0.4 -115 -8
S1 0.2 -121 -14
For calibrated LED bar or dot display use the
LM3916-1 ASSP IC for a VU meter (i.e. 3dB/step log
response). Both the LM3914 and LM3916 were
made obsolete some years ago.

Right-0. . . . on the persons erroneous selection of the sole I.C. required . . . . he could only have been MORE in coincidence with the eventual result that you suggested, should he have opted on using a
LP3943 in the application.

If the author's intention was a string of blinky lights,
that IC was a valid selection for 1997 (date on your
link). I merely pointed out that National had redone
the part with a different suffix as the original is now
obsolete.

Yes, I'm aware of National's LED flasher IC offering,
but I took the OP's request to be a serious question.
BTW, some of your fonts appear to be of different sizes,
are you shouting at us?
