Need help identifying a semiconductor

I did a search for Motorola Semiconductors.
This is what I came up with.

This company doesn't have a picture, or a listing of what package style they have,
or even the spec's on there web site. Sorry. :(

So, you will need too talk to them directly, or e-mail them.
And ask them what the spec's are for the devices they have. :wink:

Nice to see you got the schematic up for us to look at.

From the posted schematic i have to agree with rshayes in that it does
in fact look like a PUT device, part number 2N6027 or 2N6028.
Other, similar circuits use this kind of device in almost the exact same
way.

To make sure, i have updated your drawing to show the anode (A),
cathode (K) and gate (G) terminals on the device and also the device
pinout so you can easily compare this new schematic to your actual
circuit to see if the device is wired up just as shown. If it is, you can
probably purchase a 2N6027 and replace the old device with that.

The only thing i cant tell you is the calibration procedure which most
likely has to be performed once a new device is installed. Perhaps
you can measure the battery voltage and adjust so the current
cuts back when the float voltage is reached, or something like that.

Take a look at this new drawing and let us know how it works out...

I had composed this on laptop. . . .but did'nt have Internet access. . .nor even viewing capability. . . until just now, BUT, I'm placing it on, in its entirity, as there were some topics yet uncovered.

Thanx for drawing up the schema. . .as all was a bit iffy until seeing that. I am in concurrence of the circuitry needing a "PUTT_PUTT_PUTT" in that application, in kicking repetetive drive to that pulse transformer.
Then, it provides the gate drive to the ESS-CEE R'UH's.

Initially, check the health of that zener on the anode circuitry of the dee-vice, should it be so simple that its junction has crashed and that is all of your trouble.

Also, double check the accuracy of your derived circuit schematic against the actual wiring in the yellow boxed referencing.

Theeeeen. . . . if you have a scope, check at the cathode of the PUT for an outputted pulse, whilst you run the charge pot up and down its range.

If all of thaose tests come up fruitless, then I guess that you are about to have to spring for a PUT.

I have sevaral. . . . .SOME....where ??? Inventory items # 2,803,017 thru 21. . .but can't put my hands on them.
In the past, I know that some one had some new PUT's on this site and had to ask us to identify as to what they were.

At least. . . . you can still get them.
I have a WW Grainger charger that probably uses the same circuitry, but have never had problems with it, thus no need to explore its circuitry.

You posted almost the same drawing i did :-) and looks like you
also did not miss the 3.9k wiring error, and i forgot to note that
with my previous post (DEJA VU again), and i show the correct
wiring with this next drawing.
11 wouldnt be called 'onety one' anyway, it would be called "tenty one"
wouldnt it?

Anyway, here is a drawing with the corrected wiring of the 3.9k resistor
and also shows how to roll your own PUT device in case you dont feel
like ordering one. The home made PUT device requires one PNP
transistor and one NPN transistor, and they should be low leakage.
2N4403 and 2N4401 would work ok.

Hi, I obtained a new 2N6038 and installed it and the charger still doesn't work. The circuit is exactly as I drew the schematic. I relocated the 3.9K resistor as redrawn and it still doesn't work. A logic probe reveals no pulses at the K of the 2N6028. I tested the new 2N6028 before installation and I get the same readings as a bipolar NPN transistor when the anode lead of my DMM is attached to the anode of the new transistor. Is this the proper reading for a PUT? The readings I get on my DMM with the SU316 is open in all directions except when the DMM cathode is connected to the A terminal and the DMM anode connected to the G terminal. The DMM was set to diode test for these tests. I double checked all the components in the charger and thay all test good. Any other suggestions?

Hi, I finally succeeded in fixing the battery charger. I got an idea last night that maybe the semiconductor is a UJT. I have several on hand and tried one of them and it works perfectly. I just had to re-calibrate the charger slightly to compensate for the slightly difference in characteristics in the replacement part. The UJT I used is a 2N2646. One point I have to mention. The 3.9K resistor must be wired as I drew the schematic. In the modified schematic, the charger shuts off after a few seconds regardless of where the calibration adjustment is set.

Any experience with Signetics? I'm working with semiconductors in my workshop (DIY project for lazy electricians) and planning to buy old electronic components and parts for the retro style of my current project (old idea, but started working on it only now).

Signetics has changed quite a bit, they are no longer a chip maker and their website shows that they now mainly focus on IC chip packaging technologies (they must own some patents). Some of their products went to other companies but I forget who, most are deeply obsolete, Do you have a part number you are interested in? I have the 1982 and 1983 databooks.
