Very small 2mm dc power plug, where to get?

Post by MrAl »

Hi there,

I've seen a lot of 5 and 5.5mm power plugs (like those on the end
of wall warts) but i have not been able to find a 2mm (outside diameter)
one anywhere. Any ideas where to get one? The inside dia is about
0.4mm (zero point 4 millimeters).

Thanks.

Hello Mr. Al,
I had a similar problem about a month ago. I normally order from Mouser, so I looked in their catalogue and ordered what I thought was the right one. When it arrived it wasn't the right size.
I live in an area where the only place that has electronics parts locallly is Radio Shack.
I went there and they had exactly what I needed. Sure I had to buy a two pack, but at least I was able to get what I needed.
The problem I have had with the DC power connectors are the various dimensions. You have outside diameter, inside diameter plus the length of the slieve. Measuring the inside diameter can be pretty hard sometimes with only a pair of calipers.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when attempting to rig up a chager cable for my then Nokia cell phone. When I went to Radio shack and told what I needed , they handed me a large key chain with about 40 different connectors on it. It took a while to find the right fit but I liked their system as it is POSITIVE. When attempting to measure one end of a connection (even with a good set of calipers) and the trying to match the other end for catolog purchse, I often end up with a slightly different fit once I receive the part. Why on earth don't they standardize these damn things to a few standard sizes- like the good old days ?

easiest thing to do is goto the flea market.. there is usually one guy that has a table full of plug ins for cell phones,,you probably can get it for a dollar or less.. i have gotten tons fo them there
even found a doner cell phone to use to fix mine back like new...

NOKIA 5100 series.. best phone i had..its the only cell that works in a steel building..everyone else at work has to go outside to get a signal, and i can talk indoors all day..:P

Hi again,

k7elp60:
Yes, i noticed that many companies online that sell connectors dont
show the true size of the connectors, and even the data sheets they
supply dont show the sizes correctly sometimes. The also vary by
what they are using to show the size of the connector in the writeup,
as some use the inside diameter and some use the outside, and some
use both (which is what you really need to know).
I looked at many many plugs that were advertised as "2mm" but when
i finally got to the actual part it was the inside diameter, not
the outside. This tells me that the only way to purchase one is
to find out what the outside diameter is and find out what the
inside diameter is too, and make sure the data sheet says the
same thing. Otherwise you may get the wrong thing because there
are so many sizes.

Robert:
Went to RS already, they didnt have any. I guess it depends on what
local RS you go to. I checked on the web too and they dont list one
of that size. Was yours a 2mm too?

dacflyer:
The closest one we have nearby is quite far away, some 30 miles.
I was hoping to find one online that i could order.
