Hello I need to read my pets ID Chip to build a cat door any help?

The first step is to find out the technical specs of pet ID tags and then look for a RFID reader module with the right features to integrate into your project. Sounds like you need it to memorize a tag then output a signal to control a door latch.

Expect to need a plug in power supply. FRID readers use a fair amount of power especially if you operate it in a continuous mode. That would kill a battery unless you took efforts to minimize power by operating in a pulsed mode.

Thanks for the response, It really does not have to remember ID,
just pop a latch when the cats come and go outside would do okay.

It would be advisable to identify the tag, or you'd have other people's pets in your house all the time. (!) Also, although I don't know much about RFID, I would think it might be easier to read the tag then to just check if one is nearby. At any rate, since it's called RFID, you would probably be hard pressed to find non-identifying readers anywhere.

Just my two cents...

EDIT: If you don't need it to be secure, there are probably cheaper ways of doing it than RFID. I'll leave suggestions to someone who knows more about RF (that's my weak area)

Maybe there is a shortcut to just detecting the presence of an RFID without reading it. Something similar to the retail protecton systems.

You would need an antenna broadcasting the excitation frequency in a pulsed mode. In between pulses you would need a detector to listen for a response from the chip.

Still need the pet tag specs to know the basics like frequency and period of time to look for reply and some idea of antenna shape but it could be simpler not needing any digital decoding or processor.

I remember reading somewhere that there are at least 2 different
frequencies that pet RFID tags use - can't recall what they are. Best thing
to do is look up the manufacturer's specs and go from there.

How about using a low power metal detector instead. You could hang a
small Neodymium magnet covered in tool handle plastic from the cat's
collar. The plastic will help to keep the magnet from becoming stuck to
iron objects while providing a strong field to trip the detector. Just a
thought...
