A little earth ground humor

Post by Robert Reed »

After a very lenethy thread on the subject of grounds, I happened to recieve this in my E-Mail from a friend and I thought it was very timely for that on going discussion. Some of you may have seen this before, but I am sure it will be new to some .

Ring a Ling

A North Carolina farm wife called the local phone company to tell them her telephone failed to ring when her friends called and that on a few occasions, when it did ring, her dog always moaned right before the phone rang. The telephonerepairman proceeded to the scene, curious to see this psychic dog or senile lady.
He climbed a telephone pole, hooked up his test set, and dialed the subscribers house. The phone did not ring right away, but then the dog moaned and the telephone began to ring.Climbing down from the pole, the repairman found:

1) The dog was tied to the telephone systems ground wire with a steel chain and collar.

2) The wire connection to the ground wire was loose.

3) The dog was receiving 90 volts of signalling current when number was called.

4) After a couple of jolts, the dog would start moanig and then urinate.

5) The wet ground would complete the circuit, thus causing the phone to ring.

Which demonstrates that some problems CAN be fixed by pissing and moaning

Almost as good as asking the wife on TV, what is the light switch for?

Up and down goes the neighbors garage door.

What keeps them all alive is the blind attitude that "well I don’t know" ?

If they did find out its always.... Im not an electrician?

But Al Bundy showed us all why you should never try to investigate what you don’t know, with the light switch in his dogs house, the place was a mess by the end of the show with all the walls missing and his friend stuck some where between two walls.

Next it will be AC installations, or satellite dishes?

Ill stick to the tried and true.

If the NEC shows you an example, that’s good enough for me.

We used to have a great humorist here, but he left.

I guess each one finds humor where they can.

Myth busters.... Even they can sleuth when they want to...

They would conclude that because the earth is such a bad a ground [they read that some where?] ....and its way over ten ohms, [Who said that?] and the dog was tied with a ground wire that was already bonded back to earth or just lose, [With Zero potential] .....it couldn’t possibly happen?

The dog was tied to the telephone systems ground wire

It should have read the telephone positive wire was used to hitch the dog?

Then the earth ground became his body return circuit, despite all of the high resistance?

Case solved.

Mid west humor likes to stretch things?

But I did find all the dry humor in the mistakes.

"But I did find all the dry humor in the mistakes."

I suppose Chris's post must be humorous, since its mistakes show a total ignorance of the way rural telephones were connected.

That's a little unfair. Why should his total ignorance on this subject be different than on other subjects.

I don’t know anything about our rural telephones and hooks ups, that’s why the phone company comes to me when they cant figure it out?

Two myths busted for the price of one, its like sticky fly paper, you don’t have to do anything they come to you. [Big noisy buzzers too!]

The ring signal comes down the hot lead, the other is bonded to earth.

Sorry, no potential for shock, or even the joke.

The DC power voltage on the hot wire is superimposed with a AC ringer voltage over the same wire.

I was working on phones since the 80s, designing all sorts of equipment.

The myth was busted, move onto something you can win.

Pull your wool somewhere else.

Responding to you is always a good laugh.

PS, we don’t use Turkish telephone lines here in America, we use two wire hot and bonded cold.

As long as you don’t leave here letting the others think some how you were right, no harm done.

Some one may get hurt if they thought the Telephone lines were hooked up any other way.

PS say hello to the old quarter for me, I had a great time there in Istanbul.
