Is there an inexpensive kit or assembly for a low voltage variable audio oscillator ( 0 to 5000 Hz) with a frequency display? <p>I really "need" one, for alot of different hobby projects I have going on right now.

Don't know about a kit but a search for "Function Generator" on ebay showed lots of used equipment in the $5 to $50 range. A function generator would be more useful in the long run because you can make more than sine waves. Some have displays and others just have a calibrated dial. You may want one with sweep functions as well for added flexibility.<p>It wouldn't be hard or expensive to build a variable sine wave generator but once you add a display and frequency measureing circuits the cost will start to rise. Exar makes the XR2206 IC and other companies make similar chips to be the heart of function generators. (see Jameco.com kit#20685).
