A technique for stopping spam bots

I've recently been getting 100's of "trackback" type spam coming to my blog. I got fed up, because it was absolutely filthy spam and I could not stand the thought of these guys using my blog to boost their search engine ranking.

I did some searching and asking and found a PHP script called "bad behavior". It has a plugin for my blog software, but it can be used with *any* php program.

It stopped my spambot problem *instantly*. I haven't had a single trackback spam since I installed it.

For best results, it needs to have database logging and etc, but for basic mode, you just need to add a single line to your php code. I sugget we try it by adding the php code to the posting.php script so that spam bots won't be able to post messages.

The bots are really ruining the usefulness of this message board.

Whats really scary is that not only are we getting SPAM posts, but we are getting SPAM replies to legitamate posts!!!

Hello again,

I got some ideas from someone who runs another site on what they
do to prevent this sort of thing. Here are the techniques:

1. Ban IP numbers.
2. Make the registration process require a VERIFIED email address.
3. Do not delete member names, just ban them.

#2 above means they have to find another valid email address in order
to register and offend a second time.
To make sure the email address is verified, send them an initial password
where they can log on and change it, but only AFTER they have read
their email from the address they have given during the reg process.
