Monitoring your home's energy usage

Post by Newz2000 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 12:35 pm

This is cool. http://www.diykyoto.com/

It shows your home's current energy use in watts and updates its display instantly. It can also show your usage in british pounds so you can instantly see the cost savings of switching to ccfl bulbs, turning off lights, etc.

Someone should make a North American version.

EPE magazine have done two project in the last 10 years for power usage monitoring.

Microchip have two such projects on their App Notes website and I think it's Linear who have an app note to go with their RMS front end inst amp.

Dallas Semiconductors (Maxim) also as an App Note for creating a electric meter:

http://www.maxim-ic.com/appnotes.cfm/an_pk/3819
and also the customization guide:

I think if you ask DS (Maxim) nicely, you can get free samples of the MAXQ microcontroller.

Here's the response I received from them-
Hi John,

Thanks for your email, its great to hear you like our product. Unfortunately Wattson is not quite ready for North America yet. It is something we are working towards, and we hope to be able to give you some good news about that early next year. If you sign up to receive our newsletters, then we will make sure you hear about Wattson coming to America in plenty of time for you to be one of the first to get your hands on one. The newsletter sign up is in the contacts section of www.DIYKyoto.com.

I hope that helps, and look forward to hearing from you again sometime.

Best regards,

Richard

Have you got the Aug & Sept 1999 Issue of N&V?

There is a Kit called "WATTS SHOWING" in those Issues.

The full kit $79.00 +$5.00 shipping.
Available from "Harrison R&D" {www.ghg.net/dharrison} www.obdscan.net/
Phone: 281-751-8836

PLEASE NOTE:The article is seven years old, and this company may not
still carry the kit.

Just thought I'd mention it to you.
