Need motion detector module

Post by MrAl »

Hello there,

I need a motion detector module that detects the presence of a human
and outputs a pulse or a voltage level or something else a uC can
detect.
I didnt really want one that was already built, but rather wanted one
that is just mainly the sensor with some drive electronics that would
trigger the uC chip which would then take some action like sound
an alarm.
Any ideas?

They are fairly complicated.

The last batch I bought in the 80s [with diagram] had a series of micro ICs build into a postage stamp size object, claiming over 40 comparitors and something like 150 transistors, as well as a slew of other Items.

They had speed timing for the comparison, deferential comparisons of heat signatures, allowed motions to stop false triggering etc, and all to be compared to the known static heat signature of first, which does change over time and must be compensated for.

Quite complex.

Id stick with a module unless you really want to tweak these values?

Yes Chris that's what i wanted...a module with an output to go to
a uC or even a PC.

I bought a whole card of surplus break off chips destined for a machine to assemble them automatically, for 10 cents each.

I still have them but don’t have a clue where they are?

Have you web searched these items yet?

Parallax has a nice cheap motion sensor (less than $8 bucks).

http://www.parallax.com/detail.asp?product_id=555-28027

Heres a small review on it: http://www.scary-terry.com/itw/pirsensor/pirsensor.htm .

I would highly recommend buying it from Parallax, especially since their shipping is around 69 cents for small items with USPS First Class shipping.

What I do have handy is some NEW in the box complete wireless X10 IR modules handy that you can have for less than 50%.

I'd definitely go with the PIR from parallax.

Hi again,

hp: That'a a great link, thanks very much. This is got to be exactly
what i was looking for. I see they have other interesting sensors
on that site too...nice!

Chris:
Im not sure if i can go wireless as they often advertise a certain
distance you get and you never actually get anything near that.
Last temp meter i bought said 100 feet between trans and rec and
i was lucky to get 10 friggin' feet !
50% of way too much is still too much, so what are you selling them for
in US Dollars?

Hello again,

I like that little Prallelex heat sensor, but i am wondering how
it works at other temperatures, like say -20 degrees F ?
Does it still work at that temp or go south?

I haven't used the module before, but you could always email Parallax support or post on their forums asking for information. Parallax also has a 14 day money back gaurantee in which you can return the product if it doesn't fit your needs (excludes shipping costs).

I have looked through some sites for the temp data and found that most of the small PIR detectors had a temp rage of 23F - 113F (-5C - 45C). The lowest temp was 0F - 113F.

I don't know the specs for the outdoor floodlamps with inbuilt motion detection, but I would think they are better than that. (At least in Norway.)

So, if you need the low temp type get a floodlight with a PIR on it.

Gorgon:
It has to be a low voltage type, like 12vdc or less.
