Project (Night light)

Hi,

A while ago, (probably a long while ago..) there was a construction article in one of the electronics magazines. It was basically a simple night light that used an old gas regulator tube as the light source and I believe a couple of mirrors. I'm not sure if this appeared in a Nuts and Volts or Popular Electronics or Radio Electronics or maybe even one of the semi-annual project magazines that used to come out. In any case I would like to find that article if possible.

Sorry I can't be more specific than this but unfortunately that's all I remember about it.

Recreating the circuit isn't an issue, just want the article...

Thanks,

Kerry

Hi there,

Just a note...

There are modern LED nightlight circuits that use very little power
(like 1/2 watt). Perhaps you would want to build one of these?

hi again,, i am still looking for the magazine..cannot find it yet,,still digging thru stacks of books..

i will try to post a few fotos now, if i can..if not , then i will e-mail them to you..

the tube used is a voltage regulator tube "OA3" the tube i use is pumped with neon gas,,altho some were pumped with argon and a touch of mercury, and gave off a bluish glow..but it was weak, the common neon ones worked best, and were brightest.

the tube socket i used was actually a 8 pin relay socket with a notched keyway..it was perfect for this project since this socket was a older version made of melmack?

all the parts mounted neatly too..

i will describe the parts and connections here.. i hope you understand them,,

1st the parts list..

1 - 47k 2 watt
1 - 1.5k 5 watt
1 - 82ohm 1 watt
1 - 22µf 250 volt axiel cap ( type with lead on each end )
1 - 1N4004 dioad (from junkbox )
1 - 1/2 amp fuze for safety

ok, heres how to connect it.. the relay base (tube socket ) has a number for each connection. they are in the order as such.. 6-5-4-3
tube
7-8-1-2
keyway is between pin 1 & 8

ok here goes the connections,, its easy.

power cord connects to fuze then to pin 7

82ohm resistor connects from pin 7 then anode of dioad connects to 82ohm resistor ( solider in series ) then cathode of dioad connects to pin 8 of socket.

next,, you will parallel the 22µf cap. across 47k resistor..then connect it to pins 8 and 2...NOTE neg. side of cap will connect to pin 2 .

the other end of power cord will connect to pin 2 also.

next and last... connect the 1.5k resistor to pins 3 and 5.

ok,, now i will attempt to add the fotos...

good luck,, let me know what happens

i do not know what the life of this tube will be if left on all the time,, mine i just turn it on long enough to show friends how cool it is..
i have mine sitting on top of my 1937 SEARS SILVERTONE radio.
its all restored also.. love it !
i will still look for the artical too..

No need for the schematic..but thanks anyways..

A little more INFO....maybe.

It appears that the article may have appeared in the March, 1995 issue of Popular Electronics, if that helps to jog anyone's memory a bit.
