yuck, the invasion of the spammers...

Post by philba »

this is getting bad. Given that the board is unmoderated, I fear that the end is near. As much as I dislike moderation, I now see several good reasons for it here:
- kill off the spammers
- close any off-the-rails threads
- ban ultra disruptive posters

I suppose there are some registration techniques that could reduce (but not eliminate) the spammers. It would be good if N&V/Servo spent a little more time managing this board but given their track record with the articles, I kind of doubt it's a priority.

What a delight to open up the forum and find 7 new post/replys - What a dissapointment to discover more than half were spam. And very lousy spam at that!

Disappointed

Post by ku7485 »

I was also disappointed today to find that every category in this forum was covered in spam from people such as oftendgmibtoplez, etc. It's the weekends right now, and I think the Admin staff of this forum are off work and cannot delete these spam posts.

Thus I think this forum needs people who often visit this forum who could Moderate or delete this spams when they see them. So, to the staff of this forum, I offer my service and to gain permission to delete posts that are spam since I visit this forum everyday (even on the weekends). (They probably won't do this, but oh well....)

With a moderator we could always have pseudo science, pseudo physics, pseudo electronics, psuedo everything that sheep like the most,..or, you can eat reality and simply be quiet, void of the sales.

Half dozen of one, six of the other.

N&V does a great job of keeping out the sales pitch and trash.

They have a job and a living also.

Spammers are like drip, they just happen with out a brain.

Such a "laissez faire" attitude from one who curses out every SPAMbot post on this site. Elsewhere they call it Feeding the Trolls but these trolls don't come back to eat. Don't eat the SPAM, it makes everyone nauseous, just leave it on the plate undisturbed. Posting to SPAM just makes the shit float to the top.

We don't need a moderator, we need a better way to sign up for the forum that includes either a confirmation/activation email or one of those passwords (graphical letters a machine can't read kind) authenticators to weed out the web crawlers.

Sorry, you cant have it your way,....thinking and learning never comes easy.

While spam is just TP, learning is hard.

No one said it would be your way, or easy.

Weekends are always weak, no one is watching so the Spammers try really hard to dump their "Crap" in hopes of a desperate sale,... as if?

Too bad they don’t know where they drop their useless stinky load.

That would take actual work and thought.

Strange thing is, i actually wrote back to one of them, saying that
this is an Electronic forum not a dating forum. Never got a reply
and it apparently didnt do any good to inform them.
Now all i can recommend is not to respond to them *at all*
in any way, shape, or form. If they see they are not getting any
replies they will learn (maybe) that this is not the place for them.
That's the only way though. To reply and say they are not good
or in the wrong place does no good, cause that counts as a reply
nontheless. Let their replies be zero and that might help.

Yep, I agree with MrAl. Replying to them shows them that they are getting our attention. Instead we want them to think the opposite. Although, having a new moderator would be nice, it would have to be someone who we can really, really trust...

they didn't write back but if you sent real email (and not a forum PM) they probably took note. You are a live email address to them now. Maybe you noticed an up surge in the spam you are getting.., there are many sneaky ways these spammers get real live email addresses.

Yep, there are ways. Some spammers write bots (software) that go around the internet and copy down email adresses.

Could the admins, trace back the IP address of these spammers and then ban their IP from ever posting on this forum again? I think it's possible, I think I can do it on my forum...

sure, it's quite easy to do. However, it's also pretty easy to spoof IPs and getting new legit IP addrs is pretty easy as well. I suppose this little forum wouldn't be enough for them to bother, though.
