FYI: Least expensive USB to RS-232 converter cable I've seen

These converters are getting pretty cheap now. This is the least expensive one I have found. It has the Prolific chip set and it works well for us.

It almost is not worth trying to put a USB chip on your project now unless your customer is requesting it or you plan to make a lot of them.

Well, whether or not you're affiliated with the product I don't know, but I just bought one for a serial I/O board I recently developed for a client. I'll report back to the board on how well it works.
