Man vs. Machine!

Post by KamPutty »

Hi all,

Okay, here it is, the latest "issue" in my household.

This is what happened.

We live very close to a store that sells furniture. We wanted to see if they carried xyz brand. My wife said call them, but I said walk. They are just minutes walk from us.

So I got thinking. What takes more energy:

(a). Me walking around the corner and asking them, lets say 2/10th mile roundtrip

or

(b). Making a phone call and talking on phone 3 minutes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Walking would mean me spending my energy, that means food etc.
Making a call would require xzt mA's of energy...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Any thoughts?

(The last issue in my family lasted 6 years until my wife called the Mosquitoe Abatement Department, YES, there are over 1 TRILLION Mosquitoes alive at any given time...I thought no way!...)

hmmmm I think you guys can calculate this one out to a degree...

A physicist defines work (W) as the force (F) multiplied by the distance (d) over which it is exerted. This is expressed as W = F x d. Work is measured in units called joules.

Energy is the ability to do work, but power is the rate at which you do it. In physics-ese, power (P) is equal to work (W) divided by time (t), or P = W/t.

I think you can solve this one.

and 4,185 joules = 1 Calorie (as in energy from food).

The walk is better for you, but I'd guess more work is performed by walking rather than calling. Especially if you and your wife walk together.

Now, if they have an automatically opening door at the furniture store, it might change things.

4184 joules = 1 Calorie (as in food) = 1,000 calories (as in heat).
What has this forum come to?

Hi again,

I thought maybe this thread was a joke sort of, but i guess it's got
some valid ideas to talke about, so i've got one too...

This is also not a joke:

We all know what flies like to eat (like 'crap' and garbage) but they also
*WALK* on whatever they are going to eat. So what im wondering is..
if they walk on it do they get it on their feet ?
The reason for wondering about this is...once they've walked on it say
they fly up and land on your bare arm...does whatever they've walked
on get on your arm? This could be nasty depending on what they've
already walked on that day.

Even WORSE...if they land on your FOOD, does it get into your food?
This could be really bad.

We have garbage outside the house here and there are always flys
around it...and they do get in the house sometimes.

My guess would be yes and no.

Yes, bacteria and virus would get on their feet.

No, not much material would stick to their feet because if it did they couldn't land on the ceiling. (The micro hairs wouldn't grasp the surface plugged/caked with ... uh ... mud.)

Any entomologists here with the right answer???????

About insects...

Humans and other animals have lived with insects since there have been higher life forms than the insects. Yet we manage to survive. Yes, plagues do happen and are usually caused by insects. But mostly from stupidity like believing cats were evil and killing them off. This allows mice and rats, which are filthy animals, to bring their fleas and ticks, which are blood sucking insects and transfer disease much more readily than flies, which then infect humans.

But I would not worry so much about a fly landing on dog droppings then landing on your arm as I would shaking hands with a person "HOPING" they washed their hands after using the bathroom. You risk more from human waste than what you'd get from a fly landing on dog droppings.

This is not to say that a fly is disease free. But you eat more insect mass in the cleanest of foods than what will get on your arm by a fly landing on something. Hope you were not eating. But the food industry is a story of its own.
