Since National and NTE have discontinued their respective 566 versions, is there a single-chip replacement? Or a combination? I am working on some of Thomas Henry's synth designs. I know that the chips can still be found, but prices are escalating.

Jumping up to an ICL 8038, is a much larger chip of just a wee newer design age than the ‘566 and you would probably want to stay with the ‘566.

What good is Stealth Aircraft Technology….. e.g....."The Invisible Plane" if the enemy can look down at their radar display and say " Well…. there's no aircraft there, but there are two little guys in a sitting position at 40 thousand feet"

The original part was the NE566, made by Signetics and introduced in the early 1970s. Signetics was eventually bought by Philllips, and it appears that Phillips no longer makes the part. It probably didn't sell in the volume that Phillips wanted to see.

The NE566 is a VCO alone. It appears to be practically the same as the VCO in the NE565 phase locked loop chip. That chip may also be hard to get.

A similar VCO was used in the ICL8038. This is not a pin for pin replacement, since it also included a sawtooth to sine wave converter. Intersil was bought by General Electric, which sold it to Harris. Harris is using the Intersil name for its analog parts, so there is a possibility that the ICL8038 is still avaliable.

NTE appears to be a retailing operation. I doubt if they actually produce the chips they sell. The fact that NTE has discontinued the chip may indicate that nobody is producing it at a reasonable price.
