Normally this info is derived from the datasheet when you know the part number. Are there any markings you can read.

Without that Zener and other diodes come in various package sizes to determine the wattage. Like resistors 1/8W, 1/4W, 1/2W, 1W, 5W are common sizes. Physically, how large is this diode?

Determining the voltage is easy, simply apply a larger voltage across the diode in the reverse bias direction (make sure this voltage has a low current limit) and simply measure the voltage drop across the diode. If it is only less than 1V, you probably have it backward. Vz up to 15V is common but a few larger voltages do exist.

8 AAA batteries in series with a 1K resistor should make a safe enough voltage source up to 12V
