Dec 04 Mag project missing part?

Post by plunt »

In the December issue (Nuts and Volts), the "The Telephone Rang Indicator" project is missing C2 in the diagram and the parts lists, but is apparently supposed to be there per the text?

Mentioning C2 is certainly a error. I think the article is talking about N1 (neon bulb). It should conduct when the ringing voltage(approximately 90V at 20hz or so) comes. All though the wording is not just right in my opinion, the circuit should work. Using a neon bulb in series with a ringing detection circuit used to be quite common. I have seen the bulb used in series with relays to operate older answering machines. Now there are appears to be numerous solid state ring detectors.
