Hello group,
I would like to run a modern 12V am/fm cassette radio in my old 1947 Plymouth, which runs on a 6-volt system. Would any one know how to go about creating a circuit that can convert 6 volts DC to 12 volts DC? I think the radio draws about 3 amps.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The best way is to use a switching regulator in a boost configuration. This is somewhat complex, are you prepared to make something like that? I can supply a schematic, no guarentee that it works without tweaking..

If you want to create something more 'vintage',why not a vibrator circuit?I saw some for sale on ebay.

What you need is a 6 to 12v d.c to dc convertor that can supply at least 3 amps.I'd type that into a seargh engine and go from there there are probabaly a few commercial units out there.

I dont know if Radio shack still makes or sells these but Part/ catalog # 22-129a is the part you need. Aside from this try "PICO" for modern switching power supplies under step up invertors. If not I have several other compaines.

I did an active search and could not find a pre-manufactured 6/12 DC inverter.
I guess I will be forced to build my own. I am by no means an electronic engineer, however my though was to convert the 6 volts DC found in my car to AC and then run through a 1:2 transformer with 4 diodes on the out put. However my only problem is that I don’t know how to construct a circuit that can convert 6 volts DC to 6 volts AC. I guess I can use those old mechanical vibrators, but I would prefer to use a solid-state circuit.
Any additional thoughts are greatly welcomed.<p>Thank you,

If you can't find an inverter from 6 to 12 volts you can take a round about solution with readily available equipment. Buy an inverter that puts out 115v ac. Use it to run a 12v dc power supply which you can buy or build . A 300 to 500 watt unit should work fine. There about 50 bucks

I have a working 22-129A if you want to purchase it. I dont remember their value back then but make me a offer and its yours. Its rated at 3 amps exactly, plus or minus ground. I'll check for your e-mail address right after this post and scan this item and send you a picture, if its there?

Do yourself a favor, generate 12 volts initially.
Step down any power to 6 volts you desire with a
G.M. ceramic 12/6V.
Personally, I have changed the total circuitry of
my vehicles to 12 this way.
1. Readily available coils, upgrades to electronic ignitions, and all the 12V AUDIO THAT
YOU CAN BLAST YOUR WINDOWS OUT WITH.
It is a fun retrofit, and you will learn MUCH.

you could also buy a 12/6 battery, these batteries are very popular with old car buffs.
it has a battery made up of two six volt batteries, with different posts for 12 volt use and six volt use.
my frinds use them in the old willys and model t fords.
