hey does anyone know about the dvd and vhs programs that allow you to copy dvd's and vhs onto cd r 's? are they any good do they work , and what is the best one, also if anyone is interested in making trade with me for a copying program i have much to offer programs/music/etc.

You probably want to wait for them to get the bugs out of the system, before investing the 500 bucks. The first Cd burners had lots of problems and the program software sucked. Finally they sorted this out. Cant help you on the DVD's? Don't jump in both feet first in the beginning, have patience and Im sure you be thankful [and richer] of the wait?

From what I understand is you want to take a DVD or VHS movie, copy it to your hard drive, compress it, then burn it to a 650 or 700 MB CD-R. My guess is you are getting that same SPAM ad I get five times a week. This program can be found for FREE on the Internet if you look for the right thing. The free program is known as DivX;-). It is a take on the Divx DVD rental format that failed a couple of years ago. Yes, the winking smiley face is part of the software's name. Just recently the Fraunhofer Institute (yes, the MP3 guys) licensed the CODEC as part of a video streaming project. But on to your question.<p>Converting video tapes of your family or home made videos is quite easy. DO NOT rip professional DVDs or VHS tapes as this is ILLEGAL!<p>What you first do is copy the tape to your computer in MediaPlayer format (.AVI). This will be a rather large file (3 to 5 GB) for two hours of high quality video and audio. You then run a program to compress the MPEG1 or MPEG2 file into an MPEG4 or DivX;-) file. You may ask "where do I get such a program?" Rather than get e-mail from many people asking how to do this (it can be found with a simple search engine) I'll direct you to this site:<p>http://www.divxmovies.com/<p>Click on DivX SOFTWARE (left hand side of page under MENU) to get to the software directly. The 3.11 ALPHA CODEC works just fine for playback. If you want to ENCODE, I suggest that you use the newer CODEC. This compression will compress the video and audio down by a ratio of almost ten to one. The full DivX;-) video file should fit nicely on a CD-R. The only problem is you can only play them back on your computer, as far as I know.<p>I have been using this CODEC for about two years. While it is not DVD quality, it is about what it is known as, the MP3 of video. A DivX;-) file is about the cleanest download of any media I have seen. For instance, "405 the Movie" is a free file that is widely found on the Internet. If you get a DivX;-) version of this short movie, you will be surprised at the quality as compared to Quicktime, RealPlayer, and many others. The size for a three minute move runs about 8MB. At this ratio a two hour movie works out to be 320 MB which will easily fit on a standard CD-R. <p>If you have not seen "405 the Movie" this is a MUST download. This is a FREE download (or at least it used to be). DO NOT DL first run movies as this is ILLEGAL!!!! DO NOT copy copyrighted works to your computer as this is ILLEGAL!!!

When you say CD-r do you mean the standard CD or the new format Cd which is the DVD-r?

When I say CD-R, I'm talking about the 650MB or 700MB discs that have been around for a number of years now. These are the ones that are under 50 cents a disc. The burners (4x4x32x) can be found for under $70 US. I am not talking about the DVD-RAM. These are just a bit too expensive right now. The DVD blanks cost more than simply ordering the original DVD online. Just this week I started getting links to FREE software to edit and manage *.AVI video files. All they want to sell is the "banned" software that got 2600 into trouble; specifically the software that rips DVDs. I will not even mention the name of this software as I do not want the MPAA getting mad at Nuts and Volts over it.

Thanks for the reply. I misunderstood that you might be talking about the DVD model. On those you can play them in all DVD drives, not just the computer. Jolly got it right.
