Re: DC to AC conversion... ?

Maybe I missed something here. Does the existing project run off a 9v AC wall wart or something similar? If so, the easiest method is to use a standard 12volt to 120VAC inverter and a step down transformer. The inverter can be purchased for about $30. Here is an example from Wal*Mart:
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/search-n ... y=inverter
The cheapest one here is $35.
Yes Radio Shack has one but it is a rip off. If you want mail order you can go here:
http://www.dcacpowerinverters.com/12_vo ... rters.html
A bit cheaper but you must pay shipping. These inverters can be found in many automotive parts stores and department stores with automotive sections. Usually they are right next to the car stereos. I have also seen some real small units for powering laptop "wall warts".
While you might consider the commercial inverters a waste of power, you are not going to "magically" build something that is more efficient.
[ April 23, 2003: Message edited by: Jolly Roger ]
[ April 23, 2003: Message edited by: Jolly Roger ]

No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. But billions of electrons, photons, and electromagnetic waves were terribly inconvenienced!
