Here is the link to a number of Toshiba chips:<p>http://doc.semicon.toshiba.co.jp/noseek ... 2frame.htm<p>When you go to this link it gives you a listing of different chip families. The TA1xx link is there but does not list a TA1242N. But the chips near this number are for TV and VCR applications. I did a parts search at several vendors and this chip is or was made by Toshiba at one point. Price around $10 to $12.<p>Here are some links to a couple vendors:
MCM Electronics and Newark (appear to be partners):<p>http://mcm.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce ... pport/sear ch/searchResults.jsp?action=0&First=0&QText=ta1242<p>or the Newark link:<p>http://www.newark.com/NewarkWebCommerce ... g/productD etail.jsp?id=37C3402<p>There is also ChipDocs web site. This site might be able to help but does not list the chip on their site in the search engine. There is a request form to allow you to ask for the datasheet for parts, including obsolete parts. I do not know if they charge for this service or not. They are available here:<p>http://www.chipdocs.com/<p>NTE crosses this to an IC of their own but I do not think it is what you are after. For what it is worth, here is the link to their cross of "1242":<p>http://www.nteinc.com/specs/1200to1299/pdf/nte1242.pdf<p>
I know this was not the datasheet you requested but I hope it can provide some help.

It took a bit of “REally-SEARCHING” thru my URL archives to find all three, but if you’re still stymied by that compact 56 pin black box. Submitted herewith:<p>http://www.semicon.toshiba.co.jp/eng/pr ... heets.html
Most of the Toshiba devices with posted internet data sheets for future ref.<p>http://www.semicon.toshiba.co.jp/td/ja/ ... A1242N_dat asheet.pdf
Your Da Da sheet in the Japonie version….fortunately there is enough coincidental English text to make it decipherable in most places.
Pay particular interest to the earlier pages pin by pin breakouts as to internal functions. Then ultimately, there is page 43 with its in circuit application. BTW Equiss-ray fly ref input on #29 and shut down clamp out on #31-32.<p>Finally, for freebie small cut and paste Japonie snippets there is:

JVC tv's are just plain weird !
found the problem to be the vertical ic...seems these JVC tv's..if they do not see the right voltages or waveforms, the set shuts down..bout like to never find it...but i did...<p>
my motto...take no shit from a machine !<p>
I WON !

dont know if this is what you are looking for but texas instruments ic search lists 1242n as a pwm controller with power factor corrector. it is an obsolete chip but you can the data sheets.<p>good luck

Excese my ignorance, but why is it called a "Jungle" IC. Does it have a more technical sounding name I might see in a listing of parts?

Sir Hacklesup:
I think the apt technical laymans nomenclature of the device might be classified as a:
Television Video-Audio-Chroma Sync Processor I.C.
As DigitalAnalogConverterFlyer mentioned, his initial suspicion of a malfunction of X-ray protection/shutdown circuitry within the named chip……..eventually evolved into being a corrupted PS at fault instead.
If you will look at the second URL that I specified there is the Toshiba/Jn Data sheet for the device.
(Plus that first reference is a nice one to keep at hand……its Toshiba’s Diode/Transistor/IC list of what they have posted a la Web )
Seems like the earliest late 60-70’s initial phasing in of IC’s into Radio-Communications-Television there would be whole clusters of circuitry relegated to replacement with dedicated IC’s. Starting with Fairchild’s ua703 and Motorolas derivatives back in the late 60’s.
With the degree of complexity that is contained within this chip eg:….upwards of 32 plus functions spanning the video-digital-sync-chroma- spectrum . Starting with its initial SWIF interfacing-video IF-video detection-IF AFT-video amp-Y delay-ABL-sync separator- 503Khz clock osc-vert and hoz countdown dividers-vert and hoz drivers-H and V AFC functions-audio IF and audio driver-chroma subcarrier ref osc-chroma demodulator –chroma phase correction-chroma predrivers-DC restoration-X ray protection circuitry-chroma phase control-linear DC regulator-stairstep converter-RF and Delayed AGC-PWM PS corrective feedback for HV regulation-hoz and vert blanking- three PLL loop circuits. Basically just about all low level processing is done except for interfacing to the power level circuitry of the vert and hoz drive circuitry, the kine drive circuitry, power supply and high voltage sections and the complex tuner control circuitry.
Undoubtedly some neophyte must have taken a bewildered look at its many/ involved /complex internal functions and thought about a term that we sometimes refer to when we, ourselves are beleaguered with the complex- harried conditions and situations that we are sometimes confronted with.
Instead of the usual statement: D@#n it’s a jungle OUT there!…..he indeed must have thought ,…….D@#n it’s a “ jungle “ IN there.<p>73's de Edd
