USB Pen Drive - Schematics?

Has anyone attempted to make their own USB "pen" drive? You know, tiny little memory sticks that can be read by any modern computer as a "USB Mass Storage" device. Obtaining a reasonably large amount of flash memory would be hard enough, but would it be possible to use a microcontroller to emulate the USB Mass Storage protocol, and then output to a USB transceiver? Obviously this is a case where it's way easier to just buy one at the store, but it seems like they have a 90% price markup simply because they're a novelty.
