Model Railroading

Post by mustang »

Just received a Garden Railroad set for Christmas.
The engine speed, direction, and whistle are controlled by buttons which inject signals into the track that are picked up by the engine. Does anyone have any ideas how this is done.

Your tracks and train most likely run off DC, and the signals are superimposed into the tracks in a AC type signal much like the X-10 system that sends signals down the AC lines to turn on light and appliances in your house. They are high frequency pulse coded messages, varying in either Am or FM type signals.

Kinda the same why they can transmit 200 channels of infomercials into your house on one cable.
