What is a Journeyman Electrician ?

Can anyone give the legal definition for a journeyman electrician ?

One that has served an apprenticeship as an electricians assistant for usually 4 years and is recognised by a union for paying dues.

That's essentially it but in addition there are classes given by the union that must be completed and a minimum number of hours that must be worked during those 4 years. It can take longer for some people. This is true of most trades. Getting work at the union hall can be a long wait these days as my friend can attest.

In most trades, a journeyman must have worked as an apprentice under a master for a minimum number of years and then must take and pass a certification exam to be licensed as a journeyman. While an apprentice can do no work on his/her own and must be under the constant guidance of a licensed tradesman (aka a "gofer"), a journeyman can work on his own at a job site. This doesn't tie up a master, allows the company to "have more hands" and also gives the worker better marketability if he/she wishes to find work somewhere else.<p>Dean

A Journeyman Eletrician does not have to be a union member, just quallfied.
