as long as we are talking diodes/dead car tape deck

can a multimeter be used to test a diode on a circuit board to see if it is in working condition. this applies relates to the dead car tape deck that i posted earlier.
thanks for the responses on that subject.
martin

I can think of 3 ways off the top of my head:
1. My DMM has a diode tester on it, just pop it in.
2. Use the continuity function on your DMM, It should beep from cathod to anode, and give a high impedance from anode to cathod.
3. Pull the diode out of the circuit and make a simple R - Diode circuit and measure the voltage across the diode with the battery terminals switched.
4. ( i lied about 3 :) just pull the diode out and replace it...

To add to the above,if you have the unit open and connected to power, see what the voltage drop across the diode is.If it is .7,it is conducting.
