Crystal won't start

Post by Ron Hayes »

I'm having a problem with a circuit I've made, it worked fine on the breadboard and now that it has moved to a PCB the crystal won't start I just get 5V and no Oscillation, now I know it's hard to guess at the problem without seeing the PCB but I traced it out and it is fine, I even removed the Caps to see if that was causing it, it's not, I'm wondering if it may be the distance? it's about 1 1/2 inches from the uC.
Any ideas what I can check for?
btw it's a PIC 18F874

Distance is everything.

I would try more capacitance on the legs of the crystal. The is a lot of capacitance present between the traces on bradboards, which is not present (in the same amount) on the pcb.
greg
