question about jacobs ladder project

Post by fester »

I finally got around to building the jacobs ladder project in the december issue, and was wondering if anybody used the irf510 instead of the irf530. I went to the authors website and it said he tried it with the 510 and it worked, but the picture on his site looks like he used a 555 timer. The local shops dont carry the 530 and I didnt really want to wait for a mail order, so I got the 510, but its not working at the moment. Anyways just wondering if anyone had some input
Thanks, nick [email protected]

Nick :
Don’t have the article at this site to consult, but the ‘510 is a
100v 5.6A 43W unit with an on res of .54 ohms
The 530 is a
100v 14A 80W unit with an on res of .16 ohms
BUT I also think that it should make a functioning sub for the heavier unit as your current requirements are not near the max spec. You may have made a boo-boo in your driver circuitry. Confirm it by metering or scoping the FETS input drive.
Here are the specs for both the FETS:

http://www.fairchildsemi.com/ds/IR/IRF530.pdf
Any chance your circuitry is a dupe or variance of this ckt….it WORKS!

The circut is a variance of the circut on:
http://home.golden.net/~kpwillia/drcirc.htm
its from the same author. Karl P. Williams I'll try metering the input drive of the FET like you said.
Thanks
