telephone bell coil source

Post by dacflyer »

remember the old telephones that had the mechanical bells in them,,same for the outdoor bells.
does anyone know of a source to get replacement coils?
they have 4 leads, red , black , and 2 grey ones..
one of the grey wires has a red stripe on it.
there is a mylar cap that goes between the 2 grey wires, and the red and black goes directly to the telephone line
i have used up all the salvaged ones i can find,, elderly friend has a outdoor bell that gets zapped about once every 2-3 yrs. by storms or what ever..and is very partial to this big bell.
any leads are appreciated, thanks

I sometimes see those old phones at thrift stores but never thought there was any salvage value in them.

It is not a repair part, but Radio Shack has been selling outdoor loud bells for years. They still show it in stock for $34.99.
Stock number 43-174
http://www.radioshack.com
Or a store near you...

lol, I think they should change their ads to read "You've got questions? We've got cell phones". It used to be "You've got questions? We've got blank stares" but there's nothing blank about their looks now...

Just possibly the coil from the RS unit could work in your unit....

Have you considered rewinding the coils?
The most likely damage is damage to the enamel insulation on the wire. The coil form is probably in good shape. If the wire isn'y too fine, it should be possible to wind new coils with fresh wire.

I got a load of HV relays one time. I wonder about canibalizing something like one of those for a coil.

i am not sure,,but i think they are 600 ohm coils
and theres 2 seperate windings...and 4 wires..
i belive they are wired in series with the cap wired in the middle , one wire goes to tap, then the other goes to the cap, then from cap to the other wire on coil and then to the ring side..
still , looking
do they even make them mechanical phones any more.. or are they all electronic now days?

well, now I know where all the old telephones are - Turtle Lake, Wisconsin. 750,000 of them. There is an article in today's (10/10/05) WSJ, front page about how a collector ammased all those old phones. He's gone but the phones aren't. Now the town wants them gone. They might just give you a couple, or 10,000.
still chucklin...
Phil
