Television Problem

Post by Tommy volts » Fri Nov 07, 2003 10:07 am

Large Sony tv with nice clear picture and audio with the following problem:

At perfect cyclic timing intervals (like 3 close scratches on an LP record) three fixed "radio interference" horizontal bars appear across the screen.
The audio disturbance accompanies the bars. 2 of the bars are about 2 inches wide and the third is about 4 inches wide. The bars and noise appear like "radio interference".
It looks and sounds like: bbbvvvf (pause with clear screen) bbbvvvf (pause with clear screen) bbbvvvf (longer pause with clear screen) repeat endlessly at perfect timing cycle.
Right now I plan on calling a repair service, is there anything I can/should check first? My tv repair experience is very limited and I really don't want to be electrocuted. However I feel I would be remiss as a NV Forum member if I don't at least try something.

thank you for any advice.

Do you still have the problem when the cell phone is moved farther from the TV?
How long are the pauses? (In case you don't have a cell phone.)

Tommy:
MMMmmmSony…mmmmm…Projection……owwww…..Big Bux.
What you might consider is when did this condition start? Whats new or changed in the house/ or in the proximity of the unit / in relationship to that timing. Starting with a mobile phone (with its sporadic RF NAM queries),…[as so aptly suggested by Dale]…AND its switch mode power supply charger stand. Or, any other electronic... or even new generation electrical device in the house , as it certainly seems you’re receiving an “intelligent” RFI source .Not the usual sporadic burst. What you might do when it is visible on the TV…and I don’t believe that you said if it was channel specific or broadband….is get an FM radio OR a mini pocket portable TV and see if it occurs on them and then you could then enact a hunt utilizing the proximity to the sig or the directional characteristics of a monopole rod antenna element hoz oriented (vs vert).
I probably shouldn’t even suggest an AM unit , as it will be swamped with birdies from the TV’s strong deflection ckts radiations. But then you might possibly confirm the TV displaying inteference and then switch off the TV and then enact an AM search, both at the hi and low end of the AM band. Should you luck out then ,. the better directional characteristics of the receivers ferrite rod antenna on signal peak and null might be of much more assistance in zeroing in on the direction of the offending source. BTW are any other TV receivers in the household displaying that same RFI , albeit, not so severe
Lastly you could check out the Sony to see if it was in it by checking with a prerecorded commercial tape from a VCR coming in on ch 3 or 4 This way you would isolate ant /cable box/cable proper possibilities. The VCR is well shielded as well as the interconnecting coax to the set and you should get a clear picture then if you try it at a time when the interference had/was just on the screen About the only entry then would be via power line but the Sony’s RFI choke coils and filtering usually covers that verrry well. If you get the interference with the VCR signal, the next step would be to patch in a signal from the VCR’s raw video..and audio outputs into an ext/line/video input of the Sony via RCA patch cords and then see what you have…interference wise …as that bypasses the Tuner +IF strip of the Sony. Quicker than that, you may already have a DVD already into one of those inputs,…. does it exhibit that interference on Disc play ?
Feedback time….RSVP
Addenda...Typo correction....probably others ! plus <<bbbvvvf >>....ya wanna buy a vowel ?..hi hi
73's de Edd

A few questions:
Does this happen with Over The Air broadcasts? How about cable TV or satellite? Which, if either, do you have? If you have cable TV, does it happen on other sets? If satellite, does the problem happen when you display a SETUP screen?
If you play back a DVD or commercial video tape using LINE IN ports does the same thing happen? NOTE: Do not simply connect a VCR and watch a tape you recorded as the problem MIGHT be over the air and you might have recorded the problem. Use a known good tape.
Do you have any video game consoles near by? Are they unplugged from the wall outlet?
Cell phones, walkie talkies, CBs, and all sorts of other problems can cause this. There can be other things that cause this as well. Do you live near a coast or airport with a RADAR station? Did any new cell towers go up recently? Did you or a neighbor recently have children and install a baby monitor? How about "invisible fence" for a dog?
Is the problem constant or is it there at certain times of the day (i.e. evening only)?
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. But billions of electrons, photons, and electromagnetic waves were terribly inconvenienced!

Thank you to every one who has replied!
I have followed through with as many of all your suggested investigations as I could.
Here is what I have determined:
1. I am convinced that the problem is internal (not external RF interference of some kind).
2. There are hundreds of possible syptoms a TV can exhibit with as many things to check(I found a web site that listed countless numbers of symptoms and tests).
3. After reading all the Web warnings concerning lethal shock and CRT implosions I have decided not to tinker around inside the TV.
4. I will call a TV repair specialist.
Thank you again for your help.
