Lightning: I got blowed up real good!

Post by Janitor Tzap »

Well, thanks to last Wednesday's storm.
I haven't been able to get back fully online till now.

The lightning strike blew out part of the phone block, on the outside of the house.
Took out the phone line surge protector.
Fried the Modem/Router.
And took out my LAN Port on my computer.

What's weird about it was that my LAN on my computer would work with a short 6ft CAT-6 cable, but nothing else.
I then took it to a friend's shop.
Where we started messing with RJ-45 connector on the LAN Port, seeing if we could get it to connect to the router he had.
Thus, after twisting, and cleaning the contacts of the RJ-45 jack we got it to make a connection with a longer cable.
Only it wasn't stable.
After bumping the connector, it wouldn't make a connection again, even with the short 6ft CAT-6 cable.
That settled it, the jack on the Motherboard was bad.
But, just too replace the jack, I first had to remove all the shielding around it first. :x
Too much work for 10+ year old Motherboard.
Well my friend had a PCI LAN card that he sold me.
I shut off the on board LAN, and plugged in the LAN card.
After setting up the new drivers for the new LAN card.
I'm now back up and web-surfing again.

only thing that can protect you 100% from lightning is unplugging things before a storm..
Plus adding lightning rods onto your house will save it from a fire and minimize the damage..and get you an insurance discount.
Any house that has proper lightning rods,,has NEVER caught fire from lightning.

Yeah, I know.

What was weirder about it....
I heard the rumble of thunder first.
So, I started shutting down the computers connected to the Modem/Router first.
I was then going to shut down the Modem/Router, and unplug it from the data line jack.
But just then, the lightning strike happened.
I just wasn't fast enough I guess. :/

Sorry to hear that Janitor Tzap! Are you in a lightning-prone area, i.e., hilltop? Tall trees or towers nearby?
What can you do to avoid another strike? Maybe lightning rods?

Actually, I'm kinda at the bottom of a hill.

There are some tall trees, but they are nearer to my neighbor's house then too mine.

Strangely enough....
There was this old barn that had lightning rods on it.
It was up on the top of the hill.
Well, the farm was sold, and the barn was torn down.
The land was then divided up in to 10 acre lots.

No, that was just a really bad storm.
The lightning was flashing so much, that it looked like a strobe lamp going off.
